Where Do I Begin?

So, you're new to Troop 695 and you're wondering, "Where do I begin?"  Well, you've come to the right place!  Here is an overview of the Troop's activities, "terminology," and where to go for further information.  Of course, if you have a question that you'd just like to ask another Troop parent or you can't find something that should be here on the website, just send us an email and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!

Activities Overview: Monthly Activities

Each month, September through May, the Troop calendar will have the following activities.  There MAY be some changeups due to the EP school calendar, holidays, and so on, so be sure to check the Troop calendar regularly for updates.

TROOP MEETING

WHO:  All Scouts & Scout Leaders

WHEN:  Most Tuesdays, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

PARENT MEETING

WHO:  All Parents

WHEN:  First Tuesday of each month, 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

CAN RECYCLING

In conjunction with the Parent Meeting, cans are collected for recycling.  Just bring your cans to the church when you arrive for the Parent Meeting.

MONTHLY CAMPOUT

WHO:  Any Scout that wishes to attend

WHEN:  Friday early evening – Sunday late morning

WHERE:  Campground TBA (see monthly calendar)

The campout weekend may change from month to month, so don't rely on the campouts being on a set weekend.  We try to work around holidays, no-school days, and so on.  Again, check the monthly calendar for the campout dates.

In general, (again, this could change because of various conflicts), we assemble at Prairie Lutheran Church (PLC) for campout departures, and we return to the Staring Lake upper parking lot (Pioneer Trail).  We cannot return to PLC on Sundays because the church needs its parking lot for worshipers.

There is a separate permission slip for each campout that you must fill out if you plan to attend.  There is also a small fee that covers the cost of food, transportation, and so on.  You will find the current permission slip on the Camping page.

PATROL LEADERS COUNCIL (PLC*)

WHO:  Scouts in current Leadership positions

WHEN:  Third Tuesday of each month, 6:30 pm

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

The Patrol Leaders Council is made up of the youth leadership of the Troop. It meets once a month to plan the months activities and annually to plan the upcoming year.  Read Troop 103, San Fran, PLC info -- it is pertinent to all Troops.

*Okay, so this is a VERY unfortunate and confusing acronym!  Turns out that "Patrol Leaders Council" and "Prairie Lutheran Church" have the same acronym!  You'll just have to rely on context to figure out which one we're talking about -- sorry!

COMMITTEE MEETING

WHO:  Adult Committee Members

WHEN:  Third Tuesday of each month, 6:30 pm

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

The Troop Committee is comprised of registered adults that provide oversight, assistance, and guidance to the Scoutmaster in carrying out the Scouting program within the Troop. All registered adults are part of the Troop Committee. Key members of the Committee include the Committee Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Outdoor/Activities Coordinator, Advancement Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, Equipment Coordinator, and Fund Raising Coordinator.

ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER MEETING (ASM)

WHO:  All Assistant Scoutmaster

WHEN:  Third Tuesday of each month, 7:00 pm

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

Assistant Scoutmasters are the Patrol Coaches and other adult Leaders in the Troop.

ROUNDTABLE

WHO:  Any Scout Leaders that wish to attend

WHEN:  First Thursday of the month, 7:00 pm

WHERE:  Christ Presbyterian Church

Roundtable is a monthly gathering for Scout leaders to exchange ideas, promote fellowship, and to keep abreast of local Scouting news.

Roundtable is run by the Mustang District.  (We are part of the Northern Star Council, Mustang District.)

OA (ORDER OF THE ARROW)

WHO:  OA Members (Scouts & Scout Leaders)

WHEN:  First Thursday of the month, 7:00 pm

WHERE:  Christ Presbyterian Church

OA (Order of the Arrow) is the national brotherhood of Scout honor campers of the Boy Scouts of America. Members are elected by their peers after meeting basic requirements of camping knowledge and experience. Also called OA. The OA motto of "Cheerful Service" indicates their purpose. They are often found improving scout camps, running council events, and providing service to the Scouting community.

RECONNAISSANCE ARTICLES DUE

WHO:  EVERYONE!

WHEN:  Last weekend of the month (Sunday, midnight)

WHERE'ish:  eMail to Recon Editor

The Reconnaissance, ("Recon"), is the monthly Troop 695 newsletter.  We would like everyone that is so inclined to submit articles for the newsletter.

Activities Overview: Quarterly / Semi-Annual Activities

Each quarter, September through May, the Troop calendar will have the following activities.

COURT OF HONOR (COH)

WHO:  EVERYONE!

WHEN:  Tuesdays, 6:30 pm, SEP, DEC, MAR, JUN

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

The Boy Scout Court of Honor is an awards ceremony held quarterly at which scouts are recognized for their rank advancements, merit badges earned, and other awards.

Everyone is encouraged to attend, even if the Scout is not receiving an award at the COH.  Scouts may wear their merit badge sashes to Courts of Honor (over their right shoulder).

Following the ceremony, we have a reception in the church's fellowship hall.

Parents will be asked prior to the COH to bring a dish to share.  We will circulate a signup sheet at the September, December, March, and June Parent Meetings.

TROOP NOMINATIONS / ELECTIONS

WHO:  All Scouts

WHEN:  Tuesdays, 6:30 pm, SEP, MAR

WHERE:  Prairie Lutheran Church

There are several elected Leadership positions in the Troop.  Nominations and Elections are held during September and March.  Therefore, each Leadership position is held for six months.

Acronyms Designed to Make You Crazy

So, why recreate the wheel?  Troop 103 in San Francisco, CA has created a great Glossary of Scouting Terms including all the acronyms you could ever imagine!  Thanks, Troop 103!

The BSA has its own Scouting Terms page, and you can get there from here.

Having said that, there is one acronym that truly is designed to make you crazy!  It is:

PLC

PLC, in the Scouting world, stands for "Patrol Leaders Council."

PLC, in the Eden Prairie, MN, world, stands for "Prairie Lutheran Church."

It's confusing . . . need I say more?  You'll just have to figure out which one we're talking about from its context.

Troop 695 Guidebook

When you join Troop 695, you are given a ring-binder with several documents in it including hard copies of the Troop calendar(s) and the Troop Guidebook.  If you can't find the binder or you have a burning desire to memorized its contents right now, here it is.  It contains much of the information you will need in order to fully understand how the Troop is run.
